Food Insecurity on Campus - World Food Day
John Buschman - FIU Hospitality and Joanna Garcia - Center for Leadership and Service
In honor of World Food Day, FIU faculty, staff, and students engaged in a debate about the article "Have You Ever Experienced Food Insecurity" from The New York Times. Food insecurity is when someone does not have access to enough nutritious food for an active and healthy life. During this discussion, I learned that a considerable amount of children in South Florida and the United States have high food insecurity. Even though these statistics are alarming, I was glad to see that FIU cares about the nutrition its students receive. Joanna Garcia, from the Center for Leadership and Service, explained in detail the role of the FIU Student Food Pantry and how it helps reduce the food insecurity of students, contributing to their studies and health. The pantry is available to all currently enrolled students, but most importantly, no proof of need is required for students to access the pantry once a week.
Creating Local Leaders to Achieve Global Goals
Tarek A. Raouf and Flavia Goldenberg - United Nations Association
During this Tuesday Times Roundtable, I learned about the United Nations Association (UNA), a movement of Americans dedicated to supporting the United Nations. This volunteer association educates, inspires, and mobilizes Americans to support campaigns for climate change, gender equality, peace, poverty, hunger, etc. The UNA-Miami Chapter focuses mainly on gender equality and climate action, bringing awareness to the community about these important topics. Throughout the debate, we engaged in discussions about what steps to take to promote gender equality and climate awareness at the workplace.
Hot Topics in Immigration
Adonia Simpson - Americans for Immigrant Justice
The Americans for Immigrant Justice is a non-profit law firm that protects and promotes the fundamental human rights of immigrants. It offers a unique combination of free direct services, impact litigation, policy reform, and public education at local, state, and national levels. During the debate, Adonia Simpson, a lawyer from the Americans for Immigrant Justice, discussed current immigration classifications, laws, and events that are affecting different immigrant communities. I was glad to learn about the hard work this non-profit law firm does to prevent the abuse or injustice towards immigrants, and to have their contributions valued and encouraged.
